Education and Training

Teaching activities and educational programmes for students, teachers and history enthusiasts

1. Education and training as a public service

The Cagliari State Archives fulfils an educational role that supports and complements its protection, conservation, and research activities. Through training initiatives and collaborative pathways, the Institution promotes knowledge of archival sources, the historical method, and the civic value of documentary memory. These activities fall outside the scope of advanced specialist training, which is entrusted to the School of Archival, Palaeography and Diplomatic Studies (APD), and are distinct from the programming of cultural events and guided tours. The aim is to foster an ongoing relationship between the Archive, educational institutions, universities, and the community, turning sources into tools for learning and reflection.

2. Activities with schools

The Archives works with schools at all levels through educational activities designed to bring students and teachers closer to the documentary heritage and the history of institutions. The proposed programmes:

  • introduce the meaning of archival sources
  • explain how an archive works and the role of the archivist
  • support school teaching with materials and activities aligned with the curriculum

These initiatives can take different forms, adapting to teachers’ needs and students’ ages, and help develop critical reading skills and historical awareness.

3. Relations with universities and research

The Cagliari State Archives works on an ongoing basis with universities and research institutions, providing support for study, research and training activities. This includes:

  • scientific collaborations
  • curricular and training placements
  • activities supporting historical and archival research.

The Archives thus serves as a cultural and scholarly infrastructure, making expertise, sources and tools available in support of university education and knowledge production.

4. Volunteering and civic participation

Among its education and training activities, the Archives also includes cultural volunteering projects, which allow citizens to take an active role in the life of the Institution. Volunteering is an opportunity for:

  • civic education
  • direct involvement in the protection and enhancement of heritage
  • a learning experience based on participation and responsibility.

Through these initiatives, the Archives strengthens its bond with the community and promotes a shared culture of memory.

5. Seminars, meetings and training activities

The Archive also organises meetings, seminars and training activities aimed at fostering cultural enrichment and professional development for a wide range of audiences. These initiatives:

  • address topics related to history, sources and institutions
  • encourage exchange among scholars, teachers and citizens
  • strengthen dialogue between the Archives and the local community.

While these activities may be public in nature, they are presented here for their training value rather than as cultural promotion events in the narrower sense, which are addressed in the Events section.

6. Forms of collaboration and participation

Education and training activities are carried out in collaboration with schools, universities, organisations and associations, and may be launched as part of shared projects. Forms of participation and collaboration are defined on a case-by-case basis, depending on the type of initiative, the parties involved and its educational aims.
