The volume collects studies dedicated to the transformation of penitentiary institutions between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, examining the relationship between legal doctrine, legislation, prison administration and concrete application of punishment.
The contributions address the international circulation of penitentiary models, the debate on cellular isolation and the re-educational function of punishment, the conditions of women, minors and marginalized subjects, as well as the role of work, care and architecture in detention institutions.
A part of the volume is dedicated to the Sardinian cases of the prison tower of San Pancrazio, the penal colony of Castiadas and the penitentiary institutions of Cagliari, included in the broader process of formation of the Italian prison system.
