The Il Messaggero Sardo fonds preserves the records produced and collected around the periodical of the same name, which was devoted to Sardinian emigrant communities in Italy and throughout the world. For many years, the publication provided information, connection and participation for Sardinians living away from the island.

The creator of the fonds was Cooperativa Messaggero Sardo, established in Cagliari in April 1974 by professional journalists and contributors. Regione Autonoma della Sardegna entrusted the cooperative with producing, printing and distributing the monthly publication free of charge to Sardinian emigrants worldwide.

A Bridge of Identities

Video storytelling dedicated to the “Il Messaggero Sardo” fonds

The fonds includes copies of the periodical, administrative and management records, editorial materials and a varied collection of letters, poems, drawings, cartoons, postcards, diaries, loose papers, manuscripts, typescripts, periodicals and notebooks. This variety documents not only the work of the editorial team, but also the continuing relationship between the newspaper and the Sardinian communities that contributed to it.

Deposited at Archivio di Stato di Cagliari in 2013 at the request of the cooperative’s president, Giovanni Maria De Candia, and formally donated to the Institute in 2019, the fonds is an important source for studying contemporary Sardinian emigration, association networks, communication with diaspora communities and forms of identity maintained across distance.
