What is the study room?
The study room is the space dedicated to the direct consultation of archival documents held by the Cagliari State Archives. Here, scholars, students and members of the public can access original sources for historical, legal, administrative and cultural research. Consultation takes place in accordance with heritage protection rules and with the support of archival staff, who ensure that materials are used correctly.
Who is it for?
The study room is open to:
- scholars and researchers, both professional and amateur
- university students and graduates
- members of the public interested in consulting the sources
- professionals carrying out work or research
Access is subject to registration.
What can be consulted?
In the study room you can consult:
- original archival documents held by the Cagliari State Archives;
- inventories, guides and other finding aids;
- materials supporting consultation.
Consultation covers archival fonds and series spanning a broad period, from the Middle Ages to the present day, in accordance with privacy rules and the statutory limits on accessibility.
Consultation arrangements
Consultation follows procedures designed to protect the heritage:
- documents are requested using the finding aids;
- consultation is personal and must take place under staff supervision;
- only a limited number of units may be consulted at one time;
- documents are delivered according to the service timetable.

Research support
Study room staff provide:

Rules of conduct
Once registered, users may access the study room free of charge. Registration requires:
- a valid identity document;
- completion of the consultation admission form.
Registration is valid for one year and provides access to the Archives’ consultation services. Documents may be consulted subject to a number of essential rules:
- proper use of materials
- compliance with staff instructions
- compliance with protection and safety rules
