The archive of Francesco Loddo Canepa tells the story of one of Sardinia’s greatest scholars and, at the same time, the history of the formation of modern archival research on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Correspondence, notes, manuscripts, study materials, professional documentation and personal papers allow us to follow from the inside the work of a scholar who dedicated his entire life to the analysis of sources and the reconstruction of the institutional history of Sardinia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born in Cagliari in 1887, Loddo Canepa trained in legal and historical-documentary studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since his university years he frequented the State Archives of Cagliari, developing an interest that was to guide all his scientific activity. Having entered the Administration of the State Archives in 1911, he completed his training in Turin at the School of Paleography and Archival Studies, acquiring an in-depth knowledge of the Savoy sources which he would then apply to his research on the history of the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Returning to Cagliari after the First World War, he began a long career as an archivist, university professor and scholar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From 1936 to 1954 he directed the State Archives of Cagliari, contributing significantly to the reorganization and description of the documentary heritage preserved in the Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many research tools still used today by scholars derive from his work, including the famousDizionario archivistico per la Sardegna<\/em>and the inventory of the Regia Segreteria di Stato e di Guerra del Regno di Sardegna, works that marked a turning point in historical-institutional studies on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The papers in the collection also document his role as a teacher and teacher of generations of students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Through the rich correspondence, relationships with students, colleagues, universities, research institutes and Italian and foreign scholars emerge: a dense network of intellectual relationships that made the State Archives not only a place of conservation, but also a center of cultural production and research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The documentation relating to the years of the Second World War is particularly significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As early as 1940, faced with the growing threat of war, Loddo Canepa promoted the transfer to safe locations of part of the most important fonds of the State Archives, contributing significantly to the protection of a documentary heritage essential for the historical memory of Sardinia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The papers preserve traces of this commitment and of the activities carried out after the war for the recovery and reconstruction of the archival heritage damaged by the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Alongside his professional activity, the collection reveals lesser-known aspects of his personality: his interest in music, his passion for collecting, his attention to the cultural and political life of his time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Personal notes, reflections, preparatory materials and unfinished projects show the intellectual laboratory of a scholar always engaged in research and dissemination of knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Donated to the State Archives of Cagliari together with the rich personal library, the collection today represents an essential source for the history of culture, institutions and archival studies in Sardinia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Organized into three large groups – personal and family papers, correspondence and work material – it preserves the documentation produced over the course of over half a century of activity and allows us to reconstruct the human and scientific journey of an archivist who contributed decisively to the knowledge and protection of the island’s documentary heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n More than the archive of a single scholar, the Francesco Loddo Canepa collection is the story of a life spent among the papers and through the papers: a testimony to the civil function of the archives
