The papers preserved in the Cocco-Ortu collection open a privileged window on the political and institutional history of liberal Italy. Francesco Cocco-Ortu – deputy, minister, journalist – went through firsthand the construction of the unitary state, the Giolittian period and the crisis that opened the doors to fascism, leaving a documentary trail that intertwines national political life and events in Sardinia, ministerial networks and family history over a chronological span of almost two centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born in Cagliari in 1842, Cocco-Ortu began to deal with politics while still a student, collaborating with various newspapers and founding new publications. In 1889 he contributed to the birth ofThe Sardinian Union<\/em>. Sardinia remained the starting point and main reference for his public activity throughout his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In 1876 he obtained his first parliamentary mandate. Others followed, without interruption, for forty-eight years. He held positions in the Ministries of Agriculture and Justice and collaborated in the drafting of the Penal Code of 1890.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Between 1897 and 1909 he promoted measures dedicated to work, education and the development of Sardinia. The special legislation approved in 1907 represented one of the first Italian examples of organic intervention aimed at a specific regional reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The papers also document the last years of his activity. In October 1922 he tried to counter the advance of fascism by addressing Prime Minister Facta and King Vittorio Emanuele III. In 1924 he was defeated in the elections, in a context marked by pressure from the new regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The archive, declared to be of particularly relevant historical interest, was donated by the family to the State Archives of Cagliari in 2023.
