The volume and its state of preservation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Among the records preserved at Archivio di Stato di Cagliari is a manuscript volume from the notarial fonds, dated 1605, which recently underwent a complex conservation treatment. The register consists of 386 leaves and has a limp parchment binding with a particularly interesting structure: its gatherings are attached directly to the cover, using a binding technique typical of the period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When work began, the volume was in an extremely critical state of preservation and had therefore been withdrawn from consultation. The fragility of the materials and the tangible risk of losing fragments prevented even the simplest handling operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most evident problems was the severe deformation of the text block. The final fifteen gatherings had gradually shifted forwards, probably as a result of unsuitable storage conditions over time. The parchment cover was also seriously damaged, with extensive tears and losses that had impaired its protective function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The leaves displayed a particularly complex range of conservation problems. In addition to surface deposits of various kinds, there were widespread traces of moisture, visible as tidelines and stains and most likely caused by direct contact with liquid water. The paper also showed oxidation affecting about one third of the volume, evidence of past insect activity and, above all, substantial microbiological damage affecting much of the paper and the binding, increasing in severity from the middle of the volume towards the final leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The combined action of these factors had caused marked weakening of the paper support. The edges were particularly fragile, with widespread folds, tears and losses that made even turning the leaves difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The manuscript inks also showed clear signs of deterioration. Their acidic nature had triggered extensive corrosion, visible as penetration from the recto to the verso of the leaves and, in the most serious cases, as actual perforations of the support, affecting approximately 30% of the manuscript.<\/p>\n\n\n
